BDO Names CEO Successor Candidate as Berson Plans Retirement

Wayne Berson, CEO of Chicago-based BDO USA (FY23 net revenue of $2.9 billion) since 2012, will retire on June 30, 2026, capping a 14-year tenure defined by transformative growth, structural innovation and a focus on broad-based employee ownership.

As part of BDO’s longstanding succession process, the firm’s Board of Directors has named Matthew K. Becker, national managing principal of tax, as the candidate to succeed Berson. A firmwide ratification vote among BDO’s principals is expected in July, following a series of internal meetings with both leaders. If approved by majority vote, Becker will assume the CEO role beginning July 1, 2026.

Since taking the helm, Berson has overseen nearly 400 percent revenue growth, with annual revenues now reaching approximately $3 billion. He also led a fundamental shift in the firm’s structure—from a partnership to a corporation and later to an ESOP company—broadening ownership to eligible employees and aligning firm prosperity with its workforce. Berson will continue serving on the BDO USA Board and as chair of BDO International Ltd.’s Global Board until his retirement.

Becker, a long-standing member of BDO’s executive leadership team, currently oversees the strategy and operations of the firm’s tax practice. Known for his deep commitment to BDO’s purpose and values, Becker has been recognized internally for his leadership and steady hand in navigating a complex, evolving industry landscape.
