Engineered Tax Services Acquires Subcity

Julio Gonzalez

During the annual HABU Accelerator Conference for innovative CPA and accounting firms this week, Julio Gonzalez, founder and CEO of Engineered Tax Services, one of the largest specialty tax firms in the country, made his latest acquisition announcement. Engineered Tax Services has acquired the Subcity technology, team and database of thousands of local, state and federal economic incentives and tax credits.

Engineered Tax Services and Subcity share a belief in the massive opportunity to bring software and the latest technology, alongside professional service and deep domain expertise, to transform the world of tax incentives and democratize access to these programs for businesses across the country.

Historically, these incentives were the exclusive domain of Fortune 500 giants and public companies with national accounting firms. Combining human expertise with algorithmic automation is essential for identifying relevant, personalized incentive opportunities for millions of small and medium-sized businesses across the country. Many of these businesses either overlook these programs or lack the expertise and resources to successfully file applications.

“I founded Engineered Tax Services to bring tax equality to all small business owners in the United States by serving as a resource for tax credits, incentives and grants to the accounting community,” said Gonzalez. “Subcity’s mission and technological expertise align seamlessly with the Engineered Tax Services mission that began decades ago. Together, we can equip business owners with the knowledge and expertise to ensure they benefit equitably from the government incentives and tax credits designed to fuel their success.”

Subcity has digitized almost 2,000 economic incentive programs by going through both public sites and tax legislation across the U.S. It then identifies the NAICS codes, locations, investment thresholds and other parameters that a company must meet to qualify for each specific financial opportunity. Subcity aims to uncover the full suite of opportunities from real estate, renewable energy and green building programs to sector- and stage-specific programs – from workforce training and development grants to sales and use tax exemptions.

Engineered Tax Services is continuing its commitment to providing valuable resources to the accounting community and their clients. In 2020, the company expanded its offerings by acquiring The Growth Partnership, The Rosenberg Survey and ABLE CRM, enhancing support for CPAs nationwide with marketing, performance benchmarks and sales resources. Engineered Tax Services acquired INSIDE Public Accounting at the end of 2021 to strengthen the company’s ability to be a resource to the accounting community. Then, in 2022, Engineered Tax Services expanded its offerings by acquiring Tax Credit Advisors and Salazar Grant Services, reinforcing its mission to provide tax equality to all citizens who deserve these benefits.

“At Subcity we’ve helped hundreds of clients identify and file tens of millions of dollars’ worth of economic incentives and tax credits since we launched a few years ago but we’ve been missing the deep engineering expertise and energy modeling and nationwide professional service that Engineered Tax Services exemplifies,” said Alex White, CEO and co-founder of Subcity. “We are extremely excited to work with Julio and join the Engineered Tax Services team to help thousands of CPA and accounting partners, their business clients and entrepreneurs of all sizes identify, claim and collect billions in economic incentives and tax credits over the coming years.”
