Consolidation Within the Profession Continues; How Will Your Firm Rank?

The IPA 100 firms are getting bigger.

Consider the data collected by INSIDE Public Accounting in 2019 compared with last year.

Excluding the Big 4, the net revenue in 2019 ranged from Chicago-based RSM US (No. 5) at $2.4 billion to Florham Park, N.J.-based Wiss & Company (No. 100) at $39.2 million.

The IPA 100 last year showed that RSM remained at No. 5, but at $3.7 billion in net revenue, and the 100th-largest firm, Wayne, Pa.-based Global Tax Management Inc., reported $48.8 million.

Consider these additional differences:

  • Sixty-three firms reported $100 million in net revenue, according to the 2023 firm rankings, an increase from the 49 firms above the $100-million threshold in 2019.
  • Eleven firms outside the Big 4 reported $1 billion-plus in net revenue in 2023, compared with just three – RSM US, Grant Thornton and BDO – in 2019.
  • Personnel costs as a percentage of revenue were 52.7% in 2023, up from $50.2% in 2019.

As consolidation within the profession continues, where will your firm land in the IPA 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 list? Look out for the August issue of INSIDE Public Accounting, where you will find the rankings of the top 500 firms in the nation.
