Conversations about the accounting talent pipeline often focus on what’s wrong: declining enrollments, competition from other industries and concerns about the future of the CPA profession.
But what if the next generation of accountants is more optimistic than we think?
In episode 4 of season 2 of The IPA Podcast, Rob Brown sat down with Alex Romero, director of CPA Pipeline at the AICPA, to discuss what she’s hearing directly from students and early-career professionals. The conversation challenged several assumptions about the profession and offered practical insights for firm leaders looking to recruit and retain the next generation of talent.
Students Aren’t Walking Away from Accounting
One of the biggest misconceptions, Romero said, is that students no longer see accounting as an attractive career.
In reality, many students value exactly what the profession offers: stability, flexibility and the opportunity to build a meaningful career. The challenge isn’t convincing them that accounting is worthwhile, it’s helping them understand the many paths their careers can take once they enter the profession.
For firms, that means going beyond job descriptions and talking about opportunities. Young professionals want to know how they can grow, what experiences they’ll gain and what success can look like over time.
Career Conversations Matter More Than Ever
The discussion also explored how expectations are changing for younger professionals.
Today’s employees want transparency. They want regular feedback, meaningful mentorship and a clearer understanding of how decisions about their careers are made. They aren’t necessarily looking for a traditional partnership path, they’re looking for options, development and honest conversations about what’s possible.
The episode also tackles how AI is reshaping the profession. Rather than replacing accountants, emerging technologies are changing the skills firms should prioritize. Technical knowledge remains essential, but communication, judgment and relationship-building are becoming even more valuable as routine work becomes increasingly automated.
For firm leaders, the message is clear: attracting talent isn’t simply about recruiting more students. It’s about creating workplaces where those students can see a future.
