Rational Launches AI Employees for Accounting Firms

San Francisco-based startup Rational launched AI agents designed to support accounting firms with work ranging from month-end close to tax preparation.

Backed by Y Combinator, the company said the agents can onboard through guided user interviews, build a shared company knowledge base, request documents and route work to team members for review and approval. Accountants retain oversight of the work.

“As models continue to develop, the question is not about whether AI can be used. It is how they should be used for optimal growth — and we are building technology that goes far beyond a chatbot or research tool,” said Jibril Moinuddin, co-founder and CEO of Rational.

Moinuddin said he does not view AI agents as a replacement for accountants.

“It is a natural question, but I think the answer to that is no,” he said. “Accountants have accumulated decades of expertise managing clientele, building lasting trust and navigating difficult situations. That value is not going anywhere — in fact, we believe it only flourishes.”

The agents are designed to defer certain actions to human professionals and route work for review before completion. They operate through Microsoft Teams, Slack and email and can also join meetings.

“Interaction with AI should be entirely intuitive — we don’t even want a product training guide,” Moinuddin said. “Our AI employees live on Teams and Slack, have email addresses and can even join your meetings, all through the simplest interface possible.”

Rational is working with select design partners, including a Fortune Global 500 company, advisory groups and accounting firms. The startup is part of Y Combinator’s Summer 2026 batch.
