Councilor Introduces New Brand Reflecting the Evolution of the Firm

Bethesda-based IPA 300 firm Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell (FY24 net revenue of $23.1 million) announced that it is now operating under the trade name Councilor.

This change reflects both the firm’s history and the firm it is today. Councilor was the name the firm was originally founded on more than 100 years ago, and it better reflects how the firm’s role has evolved to help clients navigate both compliance requirements and important financial decisions.

As the firm evolved and its teams worked increasingly together, the brand structure no longer reflected the way clients experienced the organization. The new brand provides a clearer identity for the integrated approach clients already experience.

“Our clients are facing increasingly complex decisions that often intersect financial, business, organizational and personal priorities, and they are looking for advisors who can help them see the bigger picture,” said Dan Weaver, President and Managing Partner of Councilor. “For years, our audit, tax, advisory and wealth management professionals have worked together to provide that perspective through a single trusted relationship. We are excited about the future of our firm and believe this new brand and website will bring us in line with our clients’ changing needs.”

As part of the transition, May Barnhard Investments, a fee-only fiduciary wealth management subsidiary of Councilor, is now operating under the legal and trade name Councilor Wealth.

“For wealth clients, the relationships, planning philosophy and fee-only fiduciary commitment they rely on remain unchanged,” said Greg Estes, Managing Director and CIO of Councilor Wealth. “What this transition reinforces is our ability to bring together the right expertise at the right time. Whether a decision involves investments, tax strategy, business ownership, succession planning or a major life transition, clients benefit from advisors who understand the full picture and can help them move forward with confidence.”

The transition reflects the firm’s continued commitment to helping businesses, organizations and individuals navigate important decisions through trusted relationships, coordinated expertise and a long-term perspective for generations to come.
