IPA Data Dive: The Rise of Industry Specialists

The competitive landscape for accounting firms is shifting as clients increasingly seek advisors with deep industry knowledge rather than generalist service providers.

The number of firms reporting niche specialization increased from 489 in 2020 to 614 in 2025, reflecting a growing emphasis on industry-focused expertise. While several long-established niches continue to command a significant share of industry revenue, some of the strongest growth is occurring in sectors facing heightened regulatory complexity, succession planning demands and industry-specific operational challenges.

These shifts offer an early indicator of where client demand is becoming more specialized.

As accounting firms deepen their specialization in sectors such as family-owned businesses, construction, real estate, technology, and high-net-worth individuals, opportunities for collaboration and competition across professional services are likely to increase.

The data also suggests that specialization is not a one-time achievement.

Some historically prominent niches are losing momentum as work consolidates among a smaller number of firms with deeper expertise, creating competitive pressure for both accounting and legal professionals serving those industries.

The full IPA Insights report examines which niches are gaining market share, where revenue growth is accelerating and what those shifts reveal about the future direction of client demand across professional services. Purchase it here: https://form.jotform.com/253235687892168.
