Current Rebrands From Crete Professionals Alliance

Tampa, Fla.-based Current, formerly known as Crete Professionals Alliance, has rebranded as it continues to expand its national platform for independent accounting firms and invest in AI-enabled advisory services.

The organization said the new name reflects its belief that AI and technology can help local accounting firms compete with larger firms while delivering more sophisticated advisory services to middle-market and Main Street clients. Current supports nearly 30 partner firms across the U.S., representing more than 2,000 employees and over $500 million in annual revenue.

“There’s an enormous gap in accounting between the transactional service most people get and the strategic partnership reserved for large companies and ultra-wealthy clients,” said Steve Stagner, CEO of Current. “This gap has persisted because the largest accounting firms have had billions of dollars and entire technology departments for decades, while most have not. We’re arming the rebels.”

Backed by Thrive Holdings and in partnership with OpenAI, Current provides partner firms with shared services, technology and operational support while allowing them to retain local ownership, leadership and branding. During the 2025 tax season, the company piloted its Tax AI platform, which processed approximately 7,000 tax returns and reduced preparation time by an average of 31%, and is now expanding the technology across its partner firms.

“What started as a test engagement quickly became a much larger opportunity because Current’s team delivered exactly what they promised,” said Kelli Visser, managing partner of Larson Gross, one of the firms that participated in the pilot.
