Botkeeper Announces Closure After 11 Years

Botkeeper, an AI-driven bookkeeping platform founded in 2015, has announced it is shutting down operations following what its founder described as a “perfect storm” of macroeconomic shifts and industry consolidation.

In a statement, Enrico Palmerino, founder and CEO of Botkeeper, said the company began with the premise that artificial intelligence could transform the accounting profession at a time when the market was skeptical of AI’s ability to manage the complexity of a general ledger.

Over the past decade, Botkeeper evolved from a tech-enabled service for small businesses into a platform serving accounting firms. By the end of 2025, the company said its “Infinite” platform was capable of reconciling accounts autonomously and coding more than 80% of transactions with high accuracy. The firm was preparing to launch additional tools, including a voice-activated assistant and autonomous check-scanning technology.

Despite those developments, Palmerino said late 2025 brought unexpected industry consolidation that significantly affected Botkeeper’s largest clients and revenue base, altering the company’s financial outlook in a matter of weeks. He said leadership pursued acquisition opportunities, lender negotiations and bridge capital but ultimately determined there was no sustainable path forward.

“As a founder, I must admit a hard truth: despite our technological triumphs, we did not reach a level of product-market fit strong enough to withstand rapid industry shifts or changing market conditions before our time ran out,” Palmerino wrote.

Botkeeper had raised significant venture capital funding during its growth and was widely viewed as an early mover in applying AI to bookkeeping processes. Its closure marks a notable moment in the ongoing evolution of technology within the accounting profession.
