Mergers, Strategy and Specialization Reshape Accounting Firm Landscape

The latest INSIDE Public Accounting rankings reveal a year of major movement among U.S. accounting firms, driven by strategic mergers, specialization, and evolving service models. In an interview with Bloomberg Tax, IPA Executive Director Chelsea Summers discussed how firms like Baker Tilly climbed from 10th to 6th place after merging with Moss Adams, while newly formed Sorren entered the rankings at No. 61 after combining the strength of 13 regional firms. Even as consolidation continues, many independent firms are thriving by sharpening their niche focus, expanding advisory services, and embracing operational innovation such as outsourcing and offshoring. These shifts reflect what Summers called a “pivotal point” in the industry’s long-term evolution.
